The music of people of color is often covered or appropriated by White artists, without much credit or money given to the people and cultures who created the music originally. “The re: appropriation Show” features musicians/vocalists of color, in collaboration with White musicians, who cover or “re-appropriate” music written by White artists. “The re: appropriation Show” pokes a bit of fun at the notion of owning sound and flips perceptions of who should play what. “The re: appropriation Show” kicks off a new monthly series, The Nikki Patin Project, located at Barbara & Barbara Gallery (1021 N. Western, Chicago, IL). The Nikki Patin Project is curated by Nikki Patin (HBO Def Poet/Gay Games Gold Medalist/Phat Grrrl Superhero) and features live music, burlesque, DJs and spoken word and starring the best in avant-garde, entertaining artmakers. The Nikki Patin Project goes down the third Thursday of every month, from 7-10pm, beginning September 17th. FREE. All Ages.
The line-up:
~Hourlong Urged Education or HUE, which highlights dope music from amazing artists of color, as well as knowledge on who they are and where to find them. This month’s HUE features the colors of the Noisettes, Melanie Fiona, Stevie Wonder, Shuggie Otis and Chicago’s own Commonwealth Music Group.
~JayVe Montgomery, playing original music and reappropriating a song or two with yours truly.
~Adam Sieverson, multi-instrument musician and one of my former bandmates, with whom I’ll be ripping a minimalist set of reappropriation.
~Marta Cook, world-champion harpist, all-around incredible artist and my lead collaborator, with whom I’ll be playing some original songs and some other choice cuts.
And we’ll wrap it all up with a delicious jam session…
It all starts at 7pm one WEEK from today.
Be there and stay phat.
